Learning to ride a bicycle is one of the milestone moments in a child's development, and choosing the right bike makes a real difference to how quickly and confidently they get there.
The SmarTrike Xtend is our current bicycles recommendation: a 3-in-1 design that starts as a balance bike and converts to a pedal bicycle when the child is ready. The 14-inch wheels are sized for children in the 2 to 6 year range, and the adjustable seat ensures the bike fits properly throughout that period. Because children learn balance before adding pedals, the transition is natural and most children take to pedalling quickly.
Available in blue and pink, the SmarTrike Xtend is a well-made, lightweight bike with a good reputation among parents. It removes the need to buy a separate balance bike and a separate first pedal bike, which makes it good value over the long term.
For children who are ready for something with more range and speed, the Revvi electric balance bike and motorbike range at Epic Play offers electric-assist riding from age 3 upwards. Free UK delivery.
